I'm sorry I missed last week's painting session at Tucker Park. A special thank you to Anita for taking such great pictures of our group on Mondays; I was able to vicariously experience the tranquility of the Hood River setting where some of you were painting.
This coming Monday, we will be looking for interesting places to set up our easels at Kiyokawa Family Orchards in Parkdale, Oregon. The manager, Randy Kiyokawa, has graciously allowed us to come enjoy the views of the orchards, and Mt. Hood, and whatever else we care to paint. Of course, if anyone gets hungry, there will be fruit to purchase! Let's plan to start close to 9:00 a.m. Note: Kiyokawa Orchards does not actually open for business until 10:00 a.m.
Driving Directions:
Take Exit 64 at Hood River and follow signs to Highway 35 to Parkdale. Continue for approximately 13 miles on Highway 35. Turn RIGHT at Parkdale Junction, in front of Mt. Hood General Store. Follow signs into Parkdale, approximately 3 miles. Turn right at the flashing yellow light onto Baseline Road. Turn LEFT on Clear Creek Road (immediately after railroad tracks in Parkdale). Continue approximately three-quarters of a mile on Clear Creek Road to Hutson Road. Kiyokawa Family Orchards is on the LEFT side of the road in the green barn.
Wednesdays we go outside and paint! Painting sites change every week, sign up for notifications of the painting sites.

Monday, August 17 -- Tucker Park (Hood River)
Hello everyone!
What a great turnout we had last Monday at Rock Creek Park in Stevenson! Thanks to all of you who participated. It was a perfect day for painting!
This next Monday, August 17, we are going to give Tucker Park a try. It is a small park operated by Hood River County, just off Dee Highway. The main attraction there will be the Hood River itself, which is accessible from the park. Let's start at our usual time of around 9 a.m.
Directions: From Interstate 84 (I-84) Eastbound or Westbound - Follow I-84 to exit 63. Exit at exit 63 and turn south (away from the Columbia River). Follow for 3 blocks to State Street and turn west (right) onto State Street. Follow State Street to 13th Street. At 13th Street turn south (left). Thirteenth Street becomes 12th Street and then Tucker Road. Follow for 5.4 miles to Riverside Street. Turn west (right) onto Riverside Street and follow for 400 yards to the entrance to Tucker Park. The entrance is on the west (right) side of tucker Road.

Monday, August 10 -- Rock Creek Park, Stevenson

I hope you have been enjoying the Northwest Plein Air painting events this week. Plan to attend the show at the Columbia Arts Center this Friday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. There will be lots of great new work to see and to purchase!
On Monday, the 10th, we will gather at Rock Creek Park in Stevenson, Washington, at 9:00 a.m. The park is adjacent to the Skamania County Fairgrounds. It is a riverfront park, so it might be a bit windy. Although I have not been to this park before and can't tell you much about it, it was recommended by a painter friend, so I'm trusting her recommendation.
Driving Directions: From Hood River, head west on I-84 and take the Cascade Locks/Bridge of the Gods exit, #44. After crossing the bridge, turn right and drive toward Stevenson. Turn left onto Rock Creek Drive, sometimes also known as Second Street. The park address is 710 SW Rock Creek Drive. From White Salmon, drive west on State Route 14 to Stevenson, and turn right onto Rock Creek Drive. The park is about a mile from the turnoff.

Monday, August 3 -- Mt. Hood Winery
Hello, everyone!
In just a few days, we will be enjoying the privilege of painting with the competitors in the Columbia Gorge Plein Air paint out, which is happening at Mt. Hood Winery on August 3! The painting competition will continue throughout the next couple of days, but we will be able to paint with the 'pros' on Monday, and it should be great fun! So, get your gear ready to be at the winery by 8:30 or so on Monday, the 3rd, and plan to take in the vistas with the other experienced painters from around the greater Portland area.
Driving directions: Drive south on Highway 35, toward Mt. Hood. Turn left onto Van Horn Road, and follow the signs to Mt. Hood Winery. Restrooms are available within the winery. Hope to see all of you there!!

A Retrospective: Our July 2015 outings
A Retrospective of our July outings...
July 13: Downtown Hood River
July 20: Klickitat River and Chamberlain Rest Area
First, we checked out the view of the Klickitat River from the overlook at Lyle on the east side of the river. (too windy) (although there's a nice little overlook that would be sweet on a calm day ... worth a return)
Then, we crossed to the west side of the Klickitat River and hiked a little ways down this trail.
Finally, we left and headed back west toward home, a few of us stopping at The Chamberlain Rest Area on Hwy 14. (meanwhile it turns out there were a couple of artists who arrived at the Klickitat and DID paint there)

July 27: Rowena Crest and The Griffin House
We planned to paint at Rowena Crest, but it was awfully windy, so we left and a few artist painted from the Griffin House B&B
Rowena Crest: Morning view to the east has a lot of rising sun glare: This would be a great location on a calm day, later in the afternoon with the sun in the west.

Monday, July 27 -- Rowena Crest Viewpoint
Hello, everyone!
I apologize for this late update on next Monday's location...but I've been busy painting outdoors. What can I say? It is such a good thing to paint outdoors, and to paint often.
Monday's venue is a change from our original calendar plan; the Friends of the Gorge property in Mosier just isn't going to work out. So, I've chosen another location that will provide basically the same experience in a similar location. The Rowena Crest Viewpoint can provide a fabulous selection of views for plein air painting...BUT...pray for no wind on Monday! If it is windy, it could be very difficult to keep easels from tipping over to their deaths on the concrete walkway all around the viewpoint. It is possible to see both north and south through the Columbia Gorge from there, with particular views of Lyle and the bridge in Washington, or farther down toward The Dalles, or west toward Bingen. There are also some nice territorial views on the surrounding terrain near the Tom McCall nature preserve. So bring your easel weighting system and come enjoy the scenery!
Driving Directions: Head east on I-84 to the Mosier exit, #69. Driving through the main street in Mosier (which is old Hwy 30), you will notice a little business called Route 30 Classics and Roadside Refreshments, and it has half of a red Porsche stuck onto the side of the exterior. Using this as a mileage marker, continue on along Hwy 30 for approximately 5 miles. It is a lovely winding road. At about the 5-mile point you will see the Rowena Crest Viewpoint pullout. Bring the usual water, snacks, sunscreen, etc. There are no restrooms and few areas of screening shrubbery, but the view is worth it. Let's start between 8:30 - 9:00.

Monday, July 20 -- Klickitat Trailhead
Hello, everyone!
Thanks to those of you who turned out for last Monday's paint-out in downtown Hood River. It was kind of intimidating for some of us to try dealing with architectural perspective, but it was great to get out there to try capturing the ever-changing light and shadows, and to just feel the vibe of this great town!
Next Monday, July 20, we are meeting at the Klickitat Trailhead in Lyle, Washington. We plan to meet between 8:45 and 9:00, as usual. There are restroom facilities at the trailhead. However far you choose to wander from the parking lot is up to you! Bring sunscreen and snacks and, of course, water!
Driving directions: From the Hood River bridge on the Washington side, travel east on Hwy. 14 about 13 miles to the Klickitat River Bridge, and just beyond the bridge, turn left (north) onto Hwy. 142. Immediately turn left at the trailhead entrance.
On another subject entirely: I'm wondering what you all would think about having an end-of-the-season potluck sometime shortly after our last scheduled paint-out the last week of September? Like maybe an early evening later that week, at some wonderful group member's house? If any of you feels up to that sort of thing, please email me or let me know some Monday when we're all together. We could invite our significant others and make it a genuine social gathering! What do you say?
